Middletown, CT — The Mount Holyoke Lyons and the Smith Pioneers competed in the Wesleyan Round Robin over the weekend. Each team had challenging matches.

Mount Holyoke played their best squash to date. The Lyons defeated GWU (7-2) and then fell to Stanford (2-7), Bowdoin (1-8), and Connecticut College (1-8). However, the scores are not a true reflection of how well the Lyons played and how close some of the games were. There was a noticeable improvement in all team members’ performances as the weekend progressed. The team showed they are determined competitors, not to be written off by any opponents. Special recognition must go to Pamela Anckermann (#1), who went undefeated and beat the number one player from Bowdoin, who is ranked 18th in the country. With this win, Anckermann has increased her chances of being named an All-American at the end of the season. Captain Holly Gage (#6) also deserves mention for her fantastic performance against Stanford, helping to bring in the second win for the team. Amanda Wiggill (#3), Stephanie Wohler (#4), and Elizabeth Wright (#2) also gave solid performances all weekend. The Lyons end this semester 3-3, and look forward to the Seven Sisters tournament to be hosted at Haverford in January.

Although Smith College did not win a match at the Round Robin, losing to Hamilton College (2-7), George Washington University (4-5), Wellesley (2-7), and Connecticut College (0-9), the young team gained valuable experience. Senior co-captain Jenn Recht (#2) and sophomore Talia Williams (#3) lead the Pioneers by each winning 3 out of 4 individual matches. Other winners for Smith include senior co-captain Becky Spalding (#5) and senior Sarah Pritchard (#6), who each won one out of four games. Smith’s final match of the semester is on Monday, December 12th, against Amherst College.
