Poughkeepsie NY — This weekend Smith College played three matches at the Vassar Team Challenge. The Pioneers’ challenging season continued; however, the top of the ladder played well.

Smith met the new varsity squad from Columbia in its opening match. Because of injuries, each team only had eight players. Smith’s Beatrice Bircher (#1), Kate Whitesell (#2), Talia Williams (#3), and Jessica MacLeod (#4) won their individual matches. MacLeod’s first victory of the season came in a dramatic five-game victory over Sara Hershman. Columbia won the matches at the five through eight positions. Smith’s Sara Smyth (#5) almost sealed the victory for the Pioneers but fell 8-10 in the fifth game to Columbia’s Monica Gorman. Both teams won the same number of matches (4), games (14), and points (177), which produced the rare tie in college squash.

Despite victories by Williams and MacLeod, Smith lost to George Washington by a score of 2-7. Beatrice Bircher (#1) and George Washington’s Rachael Rayfield had a 65-minute match. Rayfield ultimately won 3-2.

On Sunday, Smith was shutout by Vassar. With the exception of Williams’ five-game defeat, all of the matches were 0-3 shutouts.
