2008 Women’s National Team Championships (Howe Cup) – Friday
Published February 22, 2008 by Western Mass Squash | ArticlesPrinceton, NJ — On Friday, the first day of the 2008 Women’s National Team Championships (Howe Cup) was played at Princeton University. Included in the 38 competing teams are Amherst, Mount Holyoke, Smith, and Williams.
In the Kurtz Cup (B Division), Williams and Mount Holyoke may be on a collision course for match in the finals. Each team won its opening match. Williams defeated Tufts, 9-0, and Mount Holyoke defeated Colby, 7-2. On Saturday, Williams will face Bates and Mount Holyoke will have a rematch with Cornell.
Amherst defeated Northeastern in the opening round of the Walker Cup (C Division). The Lord Jeffs’ second through ninth players earned the squad’s victories. Amherst and Vassar will play on Saturday.
In Epps Cup (D Division) action, Wesleyan beat Smith 8-1. At the number one position, Wesleyan’s Casey Simchik defeated Smith’s senior captain Kate Whitesell in a close five-game match. Smith’s senior Sara Smyth recorded her first career victory by beating Gwynne Hunter in three games. On Saturday, Smith will face Franklin and Marshall.
