SquashBox (without a camera)

Northampton, MA — For several years, Western Mass Squash has taken photos at squash matches from the back of the courts.  Yet these photos often did not capture the true action of a squash match.  After months of brainstorming, building, and testing, Western Mass Squash’s “SquashBox” was invented.

The SquashBox allows a camera to be placed in the front of any squash court.  The camera sits on a tripod head inside of the box.  Using a wireless remote control, the camera takes photos throughout matches.

The SquashBox protects the camera from a direct impact with an acrylic sheet and thick foam for indirect impacts.  Throughout testing, the SquashBox has been hit many times.

Western Mass Squash has taken photos using the SquashBox at Smith College and Amherst College. Despite tricky lighting conditions, the photographs came out great. We plan to use the SquashBox at matches throughout the season.

If anyone is interested in inviting Western Mass Squash to use the SquashBox at a particular match, please let us know.

Below are thumbnails photos from the testing of the SquashBox.  Click on the thumbnails to view a larger version of each photo.

  1. That is very cool indeed…and ideal for non-glass courts where “cutting a hole” in the wall is not feasible.
How did you build it? Instructions would be great (unless it is patented of course ). We see so many action shots of the pros from the front but this may be something a lot of amateur orgs could be interested in.

  2. Tough to patent. Prior art ;-)

Jay Prince (Squash Magazine) has been using a box in the court for as long as I can remember – well, at least 8 years.

I saw my first squash box camera in New Mexico in 1997 or so.

They certainly do give a different perspective, can be quite instructive seeing people from the front wall.

  3. Rochester Squash and Chris, thanks for the feedback. Although I’ve joked about patenting the SquashBox, I realize that others have developed similar ideas. That being said, I’ve never seen any documentation about the use or creation of a SquashBox.

Rochester Squash, I’ll be happy to share information for my version of the SquashBox. I’ll e-mail you later the in the week.

  4. Thanks. I look forward to hearing more about this. We may have some photo buffs/engineers here who could construct something similar.
