Boston, MA — The city of Boston will host the inaugural Can-Am Cup Squash Doubles Championship on October 24th through 26th. The competition will pair teams from the United States and Canada in a Ryder-Cup like format.
Since doubles squash is not often played in Western Massachusetts, it might be fun to venture to Boston to see the Can-Am Cup. The event will be played at the University Club (2 doubles courts) and the Harvard Club (1 doubles squash court).
In the men’s tournament, there are divisions for the following levels: A/Open, 40+, 45+, 50+, 55+, 60+, 65+, 70+.
On the women’s side, there are divisions for the following levels: A/Open, 40+, 45+, 50+.
In addition, there is a mixed A/Open division.
The Can-Am Cup has a unique scoring method. The country to earn 39.5 points wins the tournament. Here is a breakdown of the unique rules:
- In the first round (aka the lightning round), teams from each division will randomly play one-game matches that are valued at 0.5 points
- In the second round, the top teams from each group will play the opposing country’s second highest ranked team from the first round. Each best of five game match is worth one point
- In the third round, the top teams from each country play a match. In addition, the second best teams from each country play. Each match is worth 1.5 points.
For whatever reason, the Can-Am Cup decided not to use round numbers in its scoring system. Perhaps for the second Can-Am Cup, a simplified scoring method will be choosen.
