The New England Interscholastic Championships will be held on February 28th through March 1st.

This year, the boys’ championships will be broken into three divisions opposed to two. The A division will be held at Deerfield, the B division will be at Groton, and the C division will be at Suffield.

As in previous years, the girls’ championships will be divided into three divisions. The A division will be held at Choate, the B division will be at Pomfret, and the C division will be at Portsmith.

Prior to the semester break, the Deerfield boys’ team earned three team victories, the Deerfield girls’ team earned two  victories, and the boys’ teams from Berkshire and Williston Northampton each earned one victory. The girls from Berkshire and Williston Northampton will seek their first wins in January.

As a reminder, the class B division for the boy’s New England Interscholastic Squash Championships will be played at Deerfield Academy on February 22nd – 24th. The class B division will include Williston Northampton and Berkshire, while Deerfield will travel to Groton for the class A division.

Due to the weather, Berkshire’s and Deerfield’s boys were the only two squads competing on Wednesday. Berkshire lost to Canterbury, while Deerfield lost to Belmont Hill.

On Saturday, the Berkshire squads returned to winning form by beating Kent. The Bears got victories from Calvin Yoon, Colin Chang, Jason Shrubb, Jules Clark, Dudley Talbot, and Will Hearty.

Also on Saturday, Exeter’s girls traveled to Deerfield for the first time ever. Deerfield celebrated the occasion with a 5-2 victory. Deerfield’s victories came from Kelly Mulrow, Maggie Hines, Nina Kempner, Seldy Gray and Lilly Havens.

On Saturday, the boys from Williston Northampton traveled to coach Trevor McWilliam’s alma mater, Millbrook. The Wildcats’ Doug Thayer earned a 3-2 win and propelled the team to a 4-3 victory.

On the 23rd, Berkshire’s boys traveled to their local rival Williston Northampton. The Wildcats cruised to victory, 7-0.

Deerfield’s girls played the Taft Invitational on January 26th. Without their senior co-captain Maggie Hines, the team lost to both Taft and Greenwich. Co-captain Kelly Mulrow, Charlotte Dewey, and Seldy Gray each won matches against Taft.

Also on Saturday, Hotchkiss beat Williston Northampton. Steve Schoder and J.J. Lee won matches for Williston Northampton. The girls’ team visited Canterbury. Sarah Fay, Amy Cha, Cindy Young, Natasha Jones-Sikes, and Dan Bi Kim captured matches to propel Williston Northampton to a victory.

On Wednesday, the Williston Northampton boys beat Suffield 4-3 to avenge their early season loss to the Tigers.

Deerfield Academy sent its squads to the Choate Invitational last weekend. The boys’ and girls’ teams both beat Hotchkiss, but fell to Groton and host Choate.

The Williston Northampton boys emerged from four tight matches with three victories over Trinity Pawling, Canterbury, and Avon. In the TP match, Doug Thayers, Kevin Jung, J.J. Lee, and Stephen Schoder each earned victories. The Wildcats’ bottom half of the ladder stepped up in the Canterbury and Avon victories.

On Saturday, Millbrook defeated the Williston Northampton girls 4-3. Sara Fay, Becky Klauber, and Natsha Jones-Sikes won their individual matches for the Wildcats.

The Berkshire squads had a challenging week. The Berkshire boys visit Williston Northampton on Wednesday, January 23rd.

The Williston Northampton girls’ team visited their Western Mass rival, Berkshire, on Wednesday. The Wildcats emerged with a 7-0 victory.

Also on Wednesday, the Williston Northampton boys’ team lost a nail bitter, 3-4, to Suffield Academy. The Wildcats’ senior captain Doug Thayer won his match at the number four spot.

Berkshire’s Leah Slingerland was up 2-0, but ultimately lost 2-3. Kingswood escaped with a 4-3 team victory.

On Saturday, Millbrook visited Williston Northampton (B). Trevor McWilliams, Williston Northampton’s coach, went to and played for Millbrook, so the match carried personal significance. Patel Kubodera and Pablo Schildkaecht won dramatic five-game matches to lead Williston Northampton to a 4-3 victory.
