Poughkeepsie NY — This weekend Smith College played three matches at the Vassar Team Challenge. The Pioneers’ challenging season continued; however, the top of the ladder played well.

Smith met the new varsity squad from Columbia in its opening match. Because of injuries, each team only had eight players. Smith’s Beatrice Bircher (#1), Kate Whitesell (#2), Talia Williams (#3), and Jessica MacLeod (#4) won their individual matches. MacLeod’s first victory of the season came in a dramatic five-game victory over Sara Hershman. Columbia won the matches at the five through eight positions. Smith’s Sara Smyth (#5) almost sealed the victory for the Pioneers but fell 8-10 in the fifth game to Columbia’s Monica Gorman. Both teams won the same number of matches (4), games (14), and points (177), which produced the rare tie in college squash.

Despite victories by Williams and MacLeod, Smith lost to George Washington by a score of 2-7. Beatrice Bircher (#1) and George Washington’s Rachael Rayfield had a 65-minute match. Rayfield ultimately won 3-2.

On Sunday, Smith was shutout by Vassar. With the exception of Williams’ five-game defeat, all of the matches were 0-3 shutouts.

Western Mass — The Pioneer Valley hosted thirteen women’s squash teams, who competed in 28 matches at Amherst (#22), Mount Holyoke (#16), and Smith (#30). Joining the three host schools were Colby (#12), Conneticut College (#27), Franklin and Marshall (#20), George Washington (#24), Hamilton (#15), Middlebury (#14), Tufts (#17), Wellesley (#25), Wesleyan (#26), and William Smith (#18).

Mount Holyoke went undefeated in the tournament after a close 5-4 victory over Hamilton. Laurian Lue Yen (#3) came from behind to beat Madeleine Sullivanin in five games (10-8, 4-9, 6-9, 9-5, 9-5). Victories over twelfth-ranked Colby and fifteenth-ranked Hamilton should propel the Lyons higher in the rankings. Mount Holyoke’s Pamela Anckermann (#1) and Menusha Hettiarachchi (#2) remain undefeated in match play this year.

Smith had a challenging weekend going 0-5, but had strong play from its top players. Talia William (#3) played well in her matches this weekend and beat Joan Huang of Wellesley in three games.

Despite breaking a facial bone at last weekend’s Seven Sisters Tournament, Wellesley’s Sarah O’Dell (#1) helped lead her team to a 3-1 record on the weekend. The team’s victories against Conneticut, George Washington, and Smith should only help its quest to return to varsity status for the next academic year.

Wesleyan’s sole victory of the weekend came against George Washington. Casey Simchik (#1) and Liz Demakos (#3) each won five-game matches against the Colonials.

Amherst went 2-2 on the weekend, including an upset of twelfth-ranked Colby. After being down 0-2, the Jeffs’ Libby Martin (#3) won the third game against Jessica Vogel. She went on to win the match. In the team’s loss to Middlebury, the Jeffs’ Emily O’Brien (#2) and Martin each recorded five-game victories.

The Mount Holyoke Lyons and the Smith Pioneers competed in the Wesleyan Round Robin over the weekend.

Middletown, CT — The Mount Holyoke Lyons and the Smith Pioneers competed in the Wesleyan Round Robin over the weekend. Each team had challenging matches.

Mount Holyoke played their best squash to date. The Lyons defeated GWU (7-2) and then fell to Stanford (2-7), Bowdoin (1-8), and Connecticut College (1-8). However, the scores are not a true reflection of how well the Lyons played and how close some of the games were. There was a noticeable improvement in all team members’ performances as the weekend progressed. The team showed they are determined competitors, not to be written off by any opponents. Special recognition must go to Pamela Anckermann (#1), who went undefeated and beat the number one player from Bowdoin, who is ranked 18th in the country. With this win, Anckermann has increased her chances of being named an All-American at the end of the season. Captain Holly Gage (#6) also deserves mention for her fantastic performance against Stanford, helping to bring in the second win for the team. Amanda Wiggill (#3), Stephanie Wohler (#4), and Elizabeth Wright (#2) also gave solid performances all weekend. The Lyons end this semester 3-3, and look forward to the Seven Sisters tournament to be hosted at Haverford in January.

Although Smith College did not win a match at the Round Robin, losing to Hamilton College (2-7), George Washington University (4-5), Wellesley (2-7), and Connecticut College (0-9), the young team gained valuable experience. Senior co-captain Jenn Recht (#2) and sophomore Talia Williams (#3) lead the Pioneers by each winning 3 out of 4 individual matches. Other winners for Smith include senior co-captain Becky Spalding (#5) and senior Sarah Pritchard (#6), who each won one out of four games. Smith’s final match of the semester is on Monday, December 12th, against Amherst College.
