South Hadley, MA — The 2009 Seven Sisters Squash Tournament was held today at Mount Holyoke College. The tenth installment of this tournament featured Mount Holyoke (#11), Smith (#32), Vassar (#19), and Wellesley (#28).

The Seven Sisters is a consortium of women’s liberal arts colleges that was founded in 1915. Originally, the Seven Sisters included Mount Holyoke, Vassar, Smith, Wellesley, Bryn Mawr, Barnard, and Radcliffe. The consortium served as the female equivalent of the once all-male Ivy League. According to Mount Holyoke’s Athletic Director Laurie Priest, “This Seven Sisters event brings with it a rich tradition of top competitive opportunities for women that supports the development of longstanding, friendly rivalries.”

In the opening match, Smith faced Mount Holyoke. The Lyons advanced to the finals with a 9-0 victory. After arriving in South Hadley late due to bus troubles, Vassar easily defeated a shorthanded Wellesley squad.

In the match for third place, Smith earned its second victory of the season by defeating Wellesley 7-2. Smith’s Jess MacLeod defeated Ashley Stevens in five games.

The championship match was the final home match for Mount Holyoke’s seniors. During introductions, Mount Holyoke honored seniors Pamela Anckermann, Lisa Bruno, and Menusha Hettiarachchi with roses. As coach Allen Fitzsimmons pointed out during the introductions, four seasons ago Mount Holyoke was ranked 27th. Currently the Lyons, led by this group of seniors, is ranked 11th in the nation.

Mount Holyoke defeated Vassar to capture its third consecutive Seven Sisters title. All nine Lyons earned All-Tournament Team honors.

This weekend, college squash was back in full swing with matches between Bates, Middlebury, Mount Holyoke, and Williams. The women's rankings will most likely change as a result of this weekend's results.

Williamstown, MA — This weekend, college squash was back in full swing with matches between Bates, Middlebury, Mount Holyoke, and Williams.

On the women’s side, Middlebury edged Mount Holyoke by a score of 5-4. The Lyons won four of the five top spots, but the bottom of the ladder did not win a game. In the Western Mass showdown between Mount Holyoke and Williams, the Ephs prevailed 9-0. Although the score was lopsided, there were many competitive matches. At the number one position, Williams’ Toby Eyre, last year’s fourth-ranked player in the country, defeated Pam Anckermann in a close four-game match.

The 15th-ranked Middlebury Panthers may leap the 11th-ranked Mount Holyoke Lyons in the next rankings publication.  The Lyons and Panthers play similar schedules; however, Middlebury had better match scores against shared opponents. Against Hamilton, Middlebury won 8-1, while Mount Holyoke narrowly won 5-4. Against William Smith, Mount Holyoke won 8-1, but Middlebury shutout the Herons.

Mount Holyoke faces 17th-ranked Amherst on Thursday.

On the men’s side, the Ephs defeated Bates and Middlebury. Williams improves to 4-4 on the season.

Western Mass — As colleges begin their semester breaks, the College Squash Association (CSA) has released rankings for both men’s and women’s teams.

In the men’s rankings, Amherst and Williams remained at their respective preseason rankings:

10. Williams
15. Amherst

In the women’s rankings, Williams, Mount Holyoke, and Smith remained unchanged since the preseason rankings; however, Amherst advanced two spots:

9. Williams
11. Mount Holyoke
17. Amherst
32. Smith

This season, the CSA is tracking its results using US Squash’s online team ranking system. The system appears to be workings; however, many teams have not entered results for their December matches. Hopefully these results were factored into the rankings.
