Northampton, MA –The weekend of World Squash Day was celebrated in Northampton by thirty players competing in the Northampton Squash Tournament. Athletes from the Smith, Mount Holyoke, Trinity, UMASS, Dartmouth, and Wesleyan squash communities traveled to Smith College to compete in five different divisions.
The Men’s Open Division featured nationally ranked players including Wesleyan coach and Northampton resident Shona Kerr, Dartmouth Coach John Power (father of former World No. 1 Jon Power), Westminster School’s Peter Doucette and Smith College’s Tim Bacon. In perhaps the closest match of the day, Chris Caesar squeaked by assistant Mount Holyoke coach Ted Platt in the fifth game of the consolation final. Their match was an excellent example of great retrieving and sportsmanship on the part of both players. David Kinsley beat Robin Young for third place in the consolation.
The Women’s C/D final was an all-Smith affair between former alumna and former assistant coach Stacy Metzger and current Smith number 1 Jenn Recht. Metzger’s variety of shots was too much for Recht’s hustle and retrieving; 3-1 for Metzger. Smith number 2 Kate Whitesell beat Smith alumna and lexicographer-in-training Anne Miller to take third place.
Mattar “Mo” Marwan dominated the Men’s C/D final despite his unfamiliarity with wide-court play, beating Hanno Muellner in three games. Michael Bello had a walkover for third place as his opponent could not recover from a knee injury in time for their match.
The women’s beginner division was hotly contested as there were many excellent match-ups, with all participants in their first year of play. Both Laurel Jones and Olivia Caraher finished the five-person round robin with three wins apiece. Caraher finished first on the strength of her 3-0 win over Jones.
Play on Saturday was followed by a social and North America’s first tournament British Racketball Doubles play. British Racketball is played with a standard racquetball racquet and a special low bouncing ball designed for the shorter (by eight feet) squash court. A small donation was made from the entry fee to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation with remaining proceeds going to the Smith College Squash Team Fund Raising Account.
