Portsmouth, RI — This weekend, the Rhode Island Squash Open was held at the picturesque Portsmouth Abbey School. Three Western Mass players, Anne Bello, Steve O’Brien, and Michael Bello, competed in the tournament.

Anne Bello competed in the women’s 3.0 division, which began as a round robin. She lost a five-game match to Rhonda Lake (Keene, NH) and a three-game match to Mary Hargreaves (Dover, MA) to open play on Saturday. On Sunday, Bello rebounded by beating Jessica Rubine (Cranston, RI) in five games.

Steve O’Brien opened the tournament with a three-game victory over Peter Anderson (Newport, RI). On Saturday, Eric Bilodeau, the eventual winner of the 4.5 division, beat Steve in three close games (10-8, 9-1, 9-7). To conclude Saturday, O’Brien began play in the 4.5 Consolation tournament by beating Larry Hargreaves (Dover, MA) in three games. O’Brien kept winning on Sunday with a victory over Stephen Clair (Portsmouth, RI). In the consolation finals, Steve beat David Von Hemert (Providence, RI) in four games (9-3. 9-2, 9-10, 9-5).

After losing a frustrating match to Paul Shannon (North Attleborough, MA), Michael Bello competed in the 3.5 Consolation draw. Despite being struck in the jaw by his opponent’s racquet, Bello beat Kyle Brown (Portsmouth, RI) in five close and extremely long games. In the semifinals, Bello’s exhaustion could not be overcome. He lost a very close five-game match to Marshall Huggins (Portsmouth, RI), the eventual consolation winner.

The Rhode Island Open was a success with players competing in a variety of levels, including professional matches. The 6.5 draw was a CherryPharm US Team Selection Event. CherryPharm US Team Selection Events are the format for selecting players to represent Team USA for international competitions. The professionals entertained the tournament participants and numerous local spectators.
